The After SchoolProgram, Open Enrollment and You

September 22, 2010

Dear Parents;

There seems to have been a lot of confusion about the After School Program and open enrollment enrichment opportunities. I apologize for any confusion. I hope this letter makes things clearer.

The After School Program meets Monday through Thursday, 3:15 - 5:15. Participation is by invitation only. We have only a limited number of slots (30) so we carefully select each student to meet our program requirements. The purpose of the program is to support students that need academic support and tutoring. Students are invited through teacher referral. If a student is invited to the After School Program, they will receive the invitation, a letter, and a form for payment options. If the invitation is accepted, the invitee (or parents) will specifically be told that they are part of the program.

Again, this is by invitation only.

Last year we also offered fun and interesting enrichment activities as part of the program such as Tony Sohns, (also known as the Bug Man). We intend to continue and expandon activities like the Bug Man this year. For example, one enrichment activity we are looking at providing is a course of martial arts instruction. Another requirement of the Century 21 grant is to include enrichment pieces that might benefit otherstudents in our school. We will offer some of them to the entire school community. When this happens, we call it "Open Enrollment" because enrollment is "open " to all students attending Ames or Weymouth schools.

I recently sent a form home for all of the non-After School Program students. It's purpose was to gather information that we are required to have for anybody to take part in an enrichment activity which is considered "open enrollment." It was not an invitation to take part in the regular After School Program. It was not a notice for a specific enrichment activity. It did not mean your child isenrolled in the After School Program. I apologize for any confusion.

When an open enrollment activity is scheduled, we will send a separate permission form home explaining just that upcoming activity.

Open Enrollment Enrichment is entirely voluntary.

What we will provide through open enrollment, for a nominal fee:

- an organized enrichment activity open to all Ames/Weymouth students

- free healthy snacks

- bus from Weymouth to Ames afterschool

- limited bussing after the activity

More specific information will be made available as activities are booked and their dates approach. I hope this clears up any misunderstandings.

Thank you.
Bruce Geffken
